In this seventh session of the IGV–TIP Genealogy Webinar Series, Maarten Fornerod, secretary of the Indische Genealogische Vereniging (igv.nl), explores how to find ancestors in the records of the Dutch East India Company (VOC, 1602–1795). Almost one million Europeans sailed to the East Indies in VOC service, and Indo-Europeans made up roughly 10–20% of its personnel.
Maarten introduces the VOC archives and walks participants through the digital resources at the Nationaal Archief: the VOC seafarers index, VOC wills, the Incoming Letters and Papers (searchable via GLOBALISE and HTR Hub), and the General Land and Sea Muster Rolls. Using the example of Albertus Hamer, a junior surgeon at Pekalongan in the 1770s, he shows how the different sources can be combined to follow one person’s career and family.
This series is a collaboration between The Indo Project and the IGV, designed specifically for English speakers navigating Dutch-language archives. Sessions are held on the second Saturday of each month at 9:00 AM Pacific Time. 🔗 Registration and more details.
