Herdenking = Commemoration of the End of WWII
Bevrijdingsbal = Liberty Ball to Celebrate our Freedom
You are cordially invited to The Indo Project’s first annual Commemoration and Liberation Ball on Saturday, August 12, 2023, 1-5pm in Southern California. Join the Southern California Indo community as we honor the Dutch East Indies’ fallen heroes, may they never be forgotten.
All generations are invited. Come commemorate and honor. Bring your omas and opas, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and of course, cousins and neighbors – all are welcome! This important event is about our shared heritage and a tribute to generations that came before you.
Herdenking is Dutch for commemoration. It is a special day to honor and pay respect to all of our fallen heroes, our lost family members and all the resilient people of the former Dutch East Indies (Nederlands-Indië). In the Netherlands, this day of remembrance is celebrated throughout the country. Globally, people with a family history in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) celebrate within their own (Dutch/Indo) community.

Here in Southern California, the Nationale Herdenking 15 Augustus 1945 Comité, made up of a dedicated group of local volunteers, traditionally commemorated this day with both a special ceremony at our Los Angeles monument and followed by a lovely ball on the same day in order to share stories, be together and to remember our shared history. In Dutch, Bevrijdingsbal means liberation ball. At the request of the Comité, this year The Indo Project is hosting this event for the very first time. We want to spend this time with you, our community, all the people with roots in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). We cannot do this without you, and we don’t want you to miss this opportunity to honor all those who made it possible for us to be here now.

One of the ways we are building upon this special time is by introducing the first ever TIP Lifetime Achievement Award which we are presenting posthumously to René Creutzberg who left us too soon, may he rest in peace. Do you remember De Indo, the best little yellow monthly newspaper? René created that special publication in Dutch, and with the help of a dedicated group of very special volunteers, made it something people the world over looked forward to every month. He also was a driving force in the De Soos group in the 50s, 60s and 70s in Southern California.

What airport is the closest to the event? I’m interested but would need transportation to the event. Is someone from TIP staying in a hotel nearby where I could share a room?
