The Indo Project invites you to our annual Commemoration and Liberation Ball on Saturday, August 9, 2025, from 2:00–6:00 PM at the Buena Park Elks Lodge in Buena Park, California.

This meaningful event honors the resilience and legacy of the Indo community with an afternoon of remembrance and celebration, featuring live music, delicious food, and opportunities to connect with fellow community members.

Originally organized by the Nationale Herdenking 15 Augustus 1945 Comité, this annual commemoration and ball honors the liberation of the Dutch East Indies in 1945. At the committee’s request, The Indo Project began hosting the event in 2023 and is honored to continue this tradition with our community.

AVIO – Indo Lifetime Achievement Award

This year, The Indo Project is proud to present its Lifetime Achievement Award to Dutch Club AVIO for their longstanding contributions to our community.

From TIP board member Marhguerita Scaglione:

My family immigrated from the Netherlands to the U.S. in 1957 aboard the Grote Beer, eventually settling in Southern California. I first remember going to the AVIO in the early 1960s—I was a teenager then, and my sisters and I danced the night away. That night left a lasting impression, and since then, my family has been attending AVIO’s monthly events over the years. While we haven’t made it every single month or with the whole family each time, AVIO has always been a meaningful gathering place for us.

We’ve celebrated many milestones there—birthday parties, family reunions, and even Celebrations of Life. One of the more unique memories was hosting a private screening of an independent film I starred in, right at the AVIO. It’s been more than just a venue—it’s been part of our family’s story.

We have had my mother, father, brothers, sisters, our children, nieces, nephews and our grandchildren, all having enjoyed various events at the AVIO. For the four generations of the ILcken family, the AVIO is an iconic organization, which drums up great memories for our family. Thank you AVIO, for all the great memories.

  1. What is the celebration and libration from? My father was a pow from the Japanese and a second time a political prisoner from the Indonesians.

  2. I plan on attending this event, and looking forward to it. Question: have you heard about a new featured documentary , recently released in the Netherlands, in select theaters and is well received , called : “ Anak Indie “. This may be worthwhile looking into showing it around Dutch Indo community clubs . Would AVIO be interested in getting a copy for interested indos especially the younger generations
    Thank you
